The New Orleans Saints might have won the game, but Betty White won the Super Bowl.
According to the USA Today Ad Meter, which gauges public reaction, the Snickers commercial featuring the 88-year-old actress playing football was the most popular advertisement during the Super Bowl.
In the ad, a guy having a bad touch-football game plays like the former Golden Girl – and is played by her in the commercial – until he eats a Snickers bar, which transforms him back into his normal pigskin-loving self.
At the end of the spot, an announcer says, “You’re not you when you are hungry,” before the quarterback turns into another famous octogenarian, Abe Vigoda, and takes a hard hit.
Ads for Doritos, Bud Light, Budweiser and Coca-Cola rounded out the top five Super Bowl commercials among viewers, according to the Ad Meter.
Despite being talked about incessantly in front of water coolers and on the Web, the CBS ad featuring Jay Leno, David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey failed to crack the top five, possibly because it was only 10 seconds long.
On the flip side, two Danica Patrick ads for GoDaddy.com were voted in the bottom five, along with commercials for the Hyundai Sonata, Select 55, and Dockers.
The USA Today Ad Meter electronically charted the reactions of 250 adult volunteers in San Diego and McLean, Virginia, who used hand-held meters to register how much they liked each ad.
